CNNIC Released its 34th Statistical Report on Internet Development in China

The proportion of the mobile Internet users exceeded that of traditional PC users for the first time and the network applications grew with a sound momentum

  On July 21, 2014, China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) released its 34th Statistical Report on Internet Development in China (hereinafter referred to as the “Report”. The Report shows that, by the end of June 2014, the number of Internet users in China had topped 632 million, including 527 million Internet users, and the Internet penetration rate hit 46.9%. As for Internet access devices, the utilization rate of mobile phone reached 83.4% and overtook that of traditional PC (80.9%), further strengthening the position of mobile phone as the top Internet access terminal. The first half of 2014 saw higher level of use of network applications amongst Internet users.Mobile business applications, driven by mobile payment, are developing by leaps and bounds and playing a bigger role in various network applications.Internet-based financial applications were included in the report for the first time. In the past year, the utilization rate of Internet-based financial products exceeded 10%, and the products became most impressive network applications in the first half of 2014.

Ever-growing number and all-around Internet-based life of Internet users
  The Report shows that, as of June 2014, the number of Internet users in China had topped 632 million, up by 14.42 million over the end of 2013, and the Internet penetration rate was 46.9%. The focus of Internet development has shifted from “extensive development” to “intensive development”, and various network applications have profoundly changed the life of Internet users. Emerging mobile applications including mobile finance and mobile health care etc., have met the requirements for Internet access in an all-around way and facilitated full network-based life of Internet users.

  By the end of June 2014, the number of mobile Internet users in China had reached 527 million, an increase of 26.99 million over the end of 2013. The proportion of mobile Internet users was 83.4%, growing by 2.4% over the end of 2013 and exceeding 80.9% for the first time, the proportion of traditional PC Internet access, indicating that the position of mobile phone as the top Internet access terminal has been further consolidated. The utilization rates of mobile e-business, leisure & creation, information acquisition and communication applications are growing rapidly, and mobile Internet has driven the development of the Internet sector.

Payment-related applications were expected to rise and promote offline consumption; mobile online games reversed the declining trend of online games
  In the first half of 2014, payment applications become the fastest-growing application in terms of both the entire Internet sector and mobile payment. During the period, the growth rate of mobile payment users hit 63.4% and the utilization rate increased from 25.1% at the end of 2013 to 38.9%. The close integration between mobile payment and consumers’ life gave rise to numerous application scenarios and data service functions, and drove the rapid development of mobile business applications. Compared with that at the end of 2013, the growth rate of mobile shopping users, mobile group shopping users and mobile travel booking service users reached 42.0%, 25.5% and 65.4% respectively.

  By the end of June 2014, the number of online game users had reached 368 million and the utilization rate rose from 54.7% at the end of 2013 to 58.2%, reversing the trend of decline and basically recovering the level at the end of 2012. Of which, the utilization rate of mobile online games was 47.8%, increasing by 36.48 million, or 4.7%, indicating that mobile online games have become the main driving force of the overall growth of online game users.

Initial growth of the number of online wealth management service users and innovations of Internet financial service innovations
  In despite of the online financial products’ short history of 1 year, the number of their users has reached 63.83 million, with a utilization rate of 10.1%. The convenience of the Internet ensures smooth operation of the chain of funds, lowers the management and operation costs of financial products and ensures higher return on individuals' dispersed funds.
