CNNIC Milestones

On June 3, 1997, entrusted by the Office of Informatization Promotion Leading Group of State Council, CAS set up China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), which takes the liability of China's national Internet information center.

On October 12, 1998, CNNIC hosted the first "Internet Address Resources Administration Symposium".

On October 18, 1999, CNNIC hosted "the Symposium on the Internet Administration and Y2K Problems".

On January 18, 2000, CNNIC officially launched the trial system of Chinese domain name.

On May 19, 2000, Chinese Domain Name Consortium (CDNC) was jointly established by CNNIC, TWNIC, HKNIC (now HKIRC) and MONIC in Beijing.

On June 3, 2000, CNNIC obtained the authentication of ISO9002 quality certification system.

On June 5, 2000, CNNIC built up its call center. The 800 toll free consultation hotline service was available to domestic registrants thereafter.

On July 18, 2000, Qian Hualin, the vice chair of CNNIC steering committee was elected the chair of Asia-Pacific Top Level Domains (APTLD).

In July 2000, CNNIC, JPNIC, TWNIC, KRNIC (now NIDA) jointly founded Joint Engineering Team (JET), and held the first organization meeting in Beijing.

On November 1, 2000, CNNIC entrusted China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) with the mission of establish Chinese Domain Name Dispute Resolution Institution.

On October 7, 2000, The Ministry of Information Industry (MII) started to normalize the service and administration of domestic Chinese Domain Name registration, and accredited CNNIC as the sole registry of Chinese domain name.

On March 2, Professor Qian Hualin, the CNNIC recommended senior Internet expert, was elected as one of the Executive Committee members of Asia Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC).

On November 2001, CNNIC launched the Internet Keyword service.

On January 7, CNNIC's requisition of conducting ENUM application test was approved by MII. The implementation was led by the Telecom Administration Bureau of MII.

In January 2002, CNNIC established IPv6 trial network which connected with many oversea ISPs.

In April 2002, CNNIC established the test bed of DNS root server that is compatible with IPv6 and IPv4 addresses.

On May 21, 2002, CNNIC submitted "Chinese Name String in Search-based access Model for the DNS" to IETF.

On June 11, 2002, the Internet Policy and Resource Committee of the Internet Society of China (ISC) was funded in Beijing. CNNIC run the secretariat.

On September 25, CNNIC published "CNNIC Implementing Rules of Domain Name Registration", "Rules for CNNIC Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy" and "CNNIC Registrar Accreditation Policy".

From October 27 to 31, CNNIC and ISC jointly hosted ICANN Shanghai Meetings.

On March 17, 2003, the second level of .CN naming space opened to the public. The registrant may register their names directly under .CN ccTLD.

On June 26, 2003, Professor Qian Hualin, the vice Chair of CNNIC steering committee was appointed as a member of ICANN Board of Directors with tree years' term.

From September 26 to 27, 2003, CNNIC hosted "the Asia pacific Symposium on the Internet Statistical Technology" in Beijing. During the meeting, CNNIC proposed and led to form the Asia-Pacific Internet Research Alliance (APIRA). The initiate member organizations also included KRNIC (Now NIDA - National Internet Development Agency of Korea), City University of Hong Kong, University of Macao and Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC).

In April 2004, IETF formally issued its RFC 3743 with the tile of "Joint Engineering Team (JET) Guidelines for Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) Registration and Administration for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean". This document was jointly drafted by CNNIC, TWNIC, JPNIC and KRNIC (now NIDA).

On June 22, 2004, CNNIC's research base on IPv6 domain name root server, which is also a key task of "Knowledge Innovation Project" of Chinese Academy of Sciences, was successfully certified and accepted by the expert group in Changing.
