ICANN is one of the world’s leading international organizations in the Internet sector. It oversees the coordination, management and allocation of global Internet Protocol (IP) address spaces and protocol parameters, plus the management of the global Domain Name System (DNS), root server system and root zone data. ICANN uses a multi-stakeholder, consensus-driven policy-making and consultation model, encompassing supporting organizations and advisory committees. The GAC—a community of government representatives—primarily advises ICANN on public policy issues, particularly when national laws or international agreements could impact ICANN’s activities or policies.
Wang Lang was elected Vice-Chair of the GAC in a special election In March 2023, and re-elected that October for a term running through March 2025. During his tenure, he helped formulate the GAC Strategic Plan, advanced the GAC’s annual work, and as lead for the GAC’s Universal Acceptance (UA) strategic goal, focused on promoting the use of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) and Internationalized Email Addresses (EAIs). This work significantly enabled non-English-speaking populations to access the Internet in their native languages, contributing to the development of a multilingual Internet. Additionally, Wang Lang rallied the Asia-Pacific Internet community, organizing capacity-building initiatives and technical seminars via the ICANN platform. These efforts supported Asia-Pacific representatives in amplifying their voices and expanding influence within the global community.
Wang Lang’s recognition by ICANN underscores both the active engagement of China’s Internet community in international exchanges and cooperation, and its growing international recognition. Leveraging this achievement, CNNIC will deepen collaboration with ICANN, expand engagement with global multi-stakeholders, and continue contributing more to China’s participation in global digital governance and the advancement of a community with a shared future in cyberspace.
