Official Approval of the Delegation of “.China” (.中国) Domain Names, with the Global Launch Expected in August
At 11 a.m. local time, June 25, 2010 (17 o’clock Beijing time, June 25), the Board of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved the delegation of “.China” (.中国) domain names in the global DNS root zone at its annual meeting in Brussels. This means that “.China” (.中国) has been formally delegated in the global DNS root zone.
Rod Beckstrom, President and CEO of ICANN said: “1/5 of the world’s population speak Chinese. That means we just increased the potential online accessibility for roughly a billion people.”
Wei MAO, Director of China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) attended this conference and said: “The Board of ICANN officially approving the delegation of “.China” (.中国) (both simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese) marks a great success for the 10 years of research on Chinese domain names, and indicates the recognition of the international community to the Chinese culture on the Internet.
By now, CNNIC has accomplished the technical commissioning and top-level node upgrading work of “.China” (.中国) domain names. It is expected in August 2010 that the Chinese Internet users around the world can access the corresponding websites by entering the registered “.China” (.中国) domain names at the address bar of the browser. Chinese website users can register their Chinese names as the domain names in the form of “中文.中国” for netizens to visit. “.China” (.中国) domain names as the symbol of Chinese culture come onto the stage of history formally.
