The Approval of the Delegation of “.China” (.中国) Domain Names (Both Simplified and Traditional Chinese)
On April 28, 2010, China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) announced in Beijing that the international application of “.China” (.中国) domain names (both simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese) submitted by CNNIC on behalf of China had passed the Fast Track Process review of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Meanwhile, the “.China” (.中国) domain name of this Expo, namely “上海世博会.中国”, was also put into use to welcome the opening of Expo 2010.
The international application of “.China” (.中国) domain name in traditional Chinese has been approved formally.
On November 16, 2009, China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) held the launch ceremony for international application of “.China” (.中国)domain name in Beijing, submitting on behalf of China the application to ICANN. This event was witnessed and supported by representatives of a number of famous Internet enterprises such as Microsoft, Baidu, Alibaba, Taobao, Firefox, OPERA, Maxthon, Xinhuanet, People’s Daily Online, Sina.com, and Tencent, who signed their names on-site.
On April 22, 2010, the Board of ICANN passed the latest resolution, officially approving the delegation of “.China” (.中国) domain names (both simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese) submitted by CNNIC on behalf of China. Henceforth, “.China” (.中国) domain names will enter the “technical deployment period”. It is expected in the coming months that billions of Internet users speaking Chinese can access the Internet with all-Chinese domain name suffixes anywhere around the globe.
At this briefing meeting, in order to facilitate Chinese people around the world to learn the latest information about Expo 2010 Shanghai China with their mother language on the Internet, the Expo put into use the domain name “上海世博会.中国”, which is easier to remember and use, while using expo2010.cn. “上海世博会.中国” will not only become a window for Chinese netizens around the globe to learn the Expo, but also leave an imprint of China on Expo 2010.
Two technologies facilitate users to use “.China” (.中国) domain names.
“.China” (.中国) domain names both in simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese were approved by ICANN simultaneously, which means that the Chinese people around the globe can enter the website of Peking University accurately by entering its domain name either in traditional Chinese “北京大學.中國” or in simplified Chinese into the address bar of each major browser according to their language habit.
Because the English character “.” and Chinese full stop “。” are completely equivalent, billions of netizens can achieve the same effect by entering “教育部。中国” (Chinese full stop) or “教育部.中国” (English character), accessing the website of the Ministry of Education accurately. This means that netizens can open the address bar, enter the “.China” (.中国) domain names and visit the corresponding websites at any time when they are chatting or searching in the Chinese inputting state.
By now, over 90% ministries and commissions, and governmental agencies at the provincial level, over 95% media websites, over 90% of national key universities under 211 Project, over 50% of China Top 100 enterprises and over 40% China top 500 enterprises have adopted their “.China” (.中国) domain names in succession.
In order to protect the rights and interests of potential registrants to the largest extent at present, the current policy on the registration of Chinese domain names enables the users applying for “Chinese.CN” domain names to get the corresponding “Chinese.中国” domain names automatically both in simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese.
CNNIC started the study of Chinese domain names as early as 1998, and has formulated two international standards for Internet in the field in succession, providing solutions for the unification of variant Chinese characters in domain name codes and the equivalent inter-communication of simplified and traditional Chinese characters.
